New Triathlon Bike Shopping

Monday, June 29th, 2009

I’ve been waiting to write this post for almost two years now. I’m surprised I didn’t already have a draft saved and waiting to publish.

After some some financial gymnastics, and feeling pretty secure with my job (which alone is worth a celebration in this economy), I’ve decided to upgrade from the trusty ‘ol Fuji Ace to a dedicated tri bike just in time for Timberman! My first ever. Like the ones the REAL triathletes ride! For real!

I’ve taken short test rides on the Specialized Transition and Cervelo P2, but the Felt B12 and Scott Plasma are too sexy not to be up for consideration.

In the next few weeks I’ll be making my rounds around a few of the local tri shops, taking diligent notes before I bring home my new sexy ride (and figure out how to ride in aero bars). So, if you have any advice or recomendations, chime in now! I’m not even sure I know the right questions to ask when shopping around.

Oh, did I mention I’m PUMPED! New toy!!

    Hey Jamie,

Look forward to seeing you at the shop. One other bike to check out is the Colnago Flight. We have a killer deal on them right now and can do any type of build you want.

    See you soon,

    Jared

Ignore the make/model and go for what feels the best for you and is the best deal. I highly recommend Quad Multi as a good shop to try. They do a fitting with every bike, and gave me an awesome deal on a 2008 Roo.

Cervelo. I like it the best :)

i think i just got some drool on my monitor looking at all those sexy sexy bikes. you are going to have such a great time shopping and test riding. and then…your first time out on the course…i’m excited for you.

Mmmmm bikeporn, love it! I ride an isaac which you just can’t find here in the states and it took me zero getting used to. I hopped on her and rode off into the wind feeling faster than evah! You are going to love the new purchase and I’m sure it’s one you won’t regret. Good luck with the testing and decision making process.

You have to get the Specialized Transition (duh). That way we can be bike twins again!

Seriously, I love mine, but I have to attribute that at least partly to my wonderful LBS fitter. He got me into a great, very aggressive, very aero setup (80* layback). It’s awesome.

Another plus is that there aren’t a ton of them at races. It’s very rare that I see a bike just like mine. Get a Cervelo, and you’re going to have the exact same bike as 65% of the tri community.

But one way or another, you’re going to love having a sexy sexy new bike.

I’m definitely with you on the Cervelo. They are everywhere and it would be nice to have something a little different, but that doesn’t make it any less sexy.

My boyfriend has the Felt B12 and love, love, loves it. Just did his first tri with it two weeks ago and smashed the hell out of his old bike PR…

Sweet that you are getting a tri bike (and that your new job is going great). Be aware that there is a period of adapation (several weeks or longer) when switching bikes. You will be using your muscles in a different way, so you’ll want to cut back your mileage and then ramp back up, or else you risk pain/injury. Right before a critical race might not be a good time to make that change.

    • Jamie says:

Good call. If i get the bike in the next two weeks, I’ll have about 6 weeks to get used to it before Timberman. If I switch back and forth between my road bike and the new one, hopefully my body can get used to it by then.
