Reality Check

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Last weekend I had originally planned on heading up to New Hampshire to ride and run the Timberman course in prep for the big race coming up. That was until I figured out that it would be the last time that I could hang out with my little sister before she headed back to college in Nashville.

The weekend was decided. Family first. I packed up and headed back to Connecticut.

I still was able to squeeze some quality training in. I decided to plan my attack on the Rev3 course (again).

This was my fourth attack on the course, and each time I more prepared than the last. With some fueling tips from Sonja and a brand new ride, I was totally prepared to tear it up. Sure, I may not have the same bike fitness I had in June, but I was hoping the extra smarts in the noggin would make up for that.

Cervelo P2 Rev3 Course

Bike course: Beat me up. Not as bad as in the past, but the new fueling plan worked like a charm. I normally do one bottle and 300 calories per hour on the bike. I changed it up for the last hour and reduced it to 100 calories to let the water dilute the sugar bomb in my gut and make sure that I don’t cramp up on the run.

I would have been all set to run, except that my hamstrings completely seized up once I got back to the car. I guess my body isn’t as used to the new aero position as I had hoped. A little rest and I was back in the game, but had to hold off until Sunday for the half marathon.

The next morning I convinced the little sis to join me for a nice easy 13. She had only maxed out at 8 miles a few weeks ago, but she is definitely the athlete of the family and had no problem holding her own. If she ever gets over her love of sleeping late and starts doing triathlons, I’m going to have to watch my back.

Game plan: One more hard week, get set in the aero position and pump out some good running miles before it is TAPER TIME ladies and gentlemen! Last major race of the year is creeping up fast!
