Balancing Specificity and Variety

Monday, September 7th, 2009

My training this year has been very really focused on specificity. Because the only way to get faster at the swimbikerun is to swimbikerun. A lot.

But as much as I love the three sports put together, I have to throw in some variety now and again to keep the body fresh and prevent my mind from going numb.

So instead of doing yet another short (6 mile) maintenance run for Ragnar, I decided to mix it up and go for a long hike up Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire. It was only about 2 miles to the top, but about 2,000 feet in elevation gain. Crawling over lots of huge boulders was a HUGE quad workout.

I’m used to equating speed with pain, so after taking more than an hour to go just a few miles, I was a little embarassed to be sore the next day. It was at least a really good ankle and quad workout!

The views were more than worth the hike over huge boulders to the top. I felt like we were closer to the clouds than the base of the mountain. Here are three video clips from different points as we made our way to the top. Check ‘em out.
