Double Duty

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

spinning1.jpgI usually only teach one Spinning class a week.

There is a class that finishes just before mine starts, but the instructor that teaches that class asked me to sub in for her since she is sick.

I’m a pushover, and needless to say. I am taking over her class.

Now I’ve got to kick random people’s asses twice, IN A ROW?!

I should know better since I should be busy doing base training, but Oh Well! I’ve got a backpack full of PB&J, GU, Clif Bars, Nuun, my bike shorts and some kick-ass new tunes.

Here is to hoping I don’t keel over half way through the second session!

Recap: New England Triathlon Summit

Monday, February 25th, 2008

I spent all day yesterday up in Salem, MA at the New England Triathlon Summit. It was an all day triathlon-athon, if there is such a thing. Eight hours of lectures, training plans, injury prevention, technique discussions. You name it, we talked about it.

I primarily signed up just to get some continuing education credits for my Spinning certification, but it was the perfect shot in the arm that I needed on a cold February day just after a heavy snow storm. I think there were about 60 people there, ranging from newbies, to coaches, to regular age groupers like me. It was a really cool crowd. I don’t think a single person left there yesterday without a renewed love of, and energy for, the sport.
The presenters were all awesome too, although I felt pretty dumb realizing how much I still have to learn about training and racing after hearing from all the cool coaches and Ph.D.s.  I did get some really great ideas for my spinning classes, nutrition planning, and my overall training and racing schedule for this year.

I could try and recap everything I learned yesterday, but honestly, my frantically scribbled note taking won’t do everything justice. I still have to digest it all, but I at least wanted to share one of my favorite quotes of the day from the session’s keynote, IM Hawaii winner Karen Smyers (who didn’t hesitate to point out that she had been racing longer than I had been alive). I think she is going on 26 years in triathlon this year.

She was a really great speaker and totally down to earth despite her amazing career, but there was one thing that she said about her nutritional plan that really hit home for me.

Nutritional philosophy: “All things in moderation, except for beer and cookies. Those in excess.”

That is my type of nutritional plan!

Delayed Onset Soreness

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Is it just me, or is it weird to not get sore from a workout until 2-3 days later?

YES, I’ll admit it. That means that I usually don’t do any tri training for a few days after teaching my Tuesday night spin classes, but damn! Walking up stairs on Thursday/Friday for the past three weeks has been tough.

Maybe I just let myself go too much this off season and forgot what it was like to really push myself. Oh well!

Spinning Instructor Certification

Friday, October 19th, 2007

Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Blip.tv video.

A quick video of me just me giving me reactions to taking my spinning instructor certification and finally being able to feel completely comfortable and confident in front of my spinning classes. I learned a lot about things I already knew, but got much deeper into them and can actually talk much better about HR zones, workout planning, bike fit, etc…

Now I’ve just got to focus on getting people to show up to my classes!
