CycleOps JetFluid Pro Bike Trainer Review

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

It is the first weekend of summer, and here I am spending another Saturday morning inside on the bike trainer. This scenario has become a pretty normal occurrence. While I have raced three times already this year, I have actually ridden my bike outside racing than I have outside training. Me and my CycleOps trainer have become best buddies.

With the cool and wet spring that we have had in New England this year, making the investment and upgrading to a new high-end bike trainer was one of the best decisions that I have made in a while. Until this winter, I had been riding the same entry-level bike trainer that I’ve had since 2004. I bought it when I was back in college with spare change and money from returning empty beer cans.

Sure the CycleOps JetFluid Pro costs more than twice as much, but with how much nicer it is and how much use I’ve been getting out of it, I haven’t regretted it for one second.

There are a ton of reviews out there on it, but what is the real difference for ME?

1) Smoothness
This is a really hard one to quantify, but it is the difference between riding on slick newly paved asphalt and weather beaten and cracked roads. It just feels really NICE as you whip the pedals around, which makes a major difference if you are on there for hours at a time. It also helps make it a lot quieter, which Sam and my upstairs neighbors appreciate. I am sure.

I tried to record this before and after video to compare the noise levels and smoothness. It is hard to tell the volume difference, but you can definitely tell that the CycleOps sounds like a smooth jet engine while the old trainer sounds like I’m powering a coffee grinder or something. Either way, you get the idea.

2) Power
No, this version doesn’t tell me my wattage (see the PowerBeam Pro if you want a trainer with that). It lets me generate it. A LOT of it. Or at least it doesn’t limit how much my legs can put out.

I’ve obviously progressed a lot over the last +5 years from my meager beginnings as a triathlete, and the JetFluid doesn’t hold me back. With my old trainer getting worn down, I’d be spinning away on my hardest gear, yet far away from my top end HR. No.more. The only limit is now much pain I want to inflict on my own legs and lungs.

3)  Customer service

I had always heard good things about the CycleOps customer service crew before, but never had any desire to experience it for myself. I just wanted something that worked. Unfortunately in the first few weeks that wasn’t the case and the resistance unit kept disengaging from my tire mid way through a ride. Frustrating. I tried to fix it myself, but failed.

Instead of throwing it through the window (which I considered) I gave CycleOps a call. I explained what was happening and what I tried to do to fix it.

“Hmm. That is what I was going to recommend to fix it. Give me your address and I’ll have a new resistance unit in the mail for you tomorrow.” – Mr. Nice CycleOps Guy

No pleading. No begging. No nothing. Just a five minute phone call and they expresses shipped a new unit the next morning. It was at my doorstep in the next few days and they paid for return shipping of the old unit.

LOVE.

I may never know what the issue with the old resistance unit was, but the new one works like a charm and I am a very happy customer.

Rev3 Quassy Pictures and Video

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

A week and a half later, I’ve finally been able to go through all the pictures and videos from Rev3 Quassy. Between my duties working behind the scenes for the pro race, I was able to snap some pictures at the swim. By far my favorite was this picture of James Cunnama coming out of the water on his way to a win. He looks like an animal about to attack. I love it.

My second favorite is this panorama shot from the age grouper swim start. Click through to see the big version.

And lastly, I sliced up some clips from the camera that I had mounted to my aerobars. Rather than show the whole video (which is a MEGA big HD file) I just threw together some of my favorite parts of the course. It just happens to be that they are almost all speedy descents. It looks like I edited parts to fast forward through them, but it is all in real time. A few of the shots are of me hitting +46 mph. I even passed the USAT official on the motorcycle a few times.

Enjoy!

Walden, You Are My Home

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Today was my first Walden Pond swim-bike workout of the year. I can say that without a doubt, that it is my favorite happy place. Not only is there some interesting history behind the pond, but there are always tons of friendly triathlete faces that show up in the parking lot every Saturday morning, great hidden trails all around the pond and quiet bike-friendly roads surround it.

Chasing fishies.

See?! I told you it made me happy.

PSA: Clean Your Aerobar Pads

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

One of the reasons I love triathlon is because it is insanely complicated and I’m constantly learning ways to improve my game.

One of the reasons why I DON’T love triathlon is because sometimes learning those lessons is not awesome.

I woke up on Friday morning and realized I had a nasty rash on my right forearm. Sam was smart enough to have me draw a circle around it with a pen to see if it got any better.

Unfortunately it only got bigger and nastier later in the day. See how much bigger it is compared the pen mark outline that I drew in the morning?

Thankfully it started to fade after I took an antihistamine.

I didn’t have a clue as to what was causing it and why it wasn’t anywhere else on my body, which kinda freaked me out. At first I thought that it was something I ate and that I was having an allergic reaction, but I didn’t change my diet at all in the last week. Then I thought that I got bit by a spider in my sleep. I even hoped that it was a radioactive spider that would give me superpowers. But I tried climbing up a wall or shooting webs from my wrists, but failed miserably at both. Clearly that wasn’t it either.

My last theory was that I became Patient Zero of the zombie infection that would begin the end of the world. But the rapture came and went, and I never developed a hunger for brains, so that theory failed.

But the next morning I developed almost the exact same rash on my opposite forearm and I got even more confused.

After a trip to the doctor, we decided that my aerobar pads had become hosts to some fungal infection and rubbed off on my arm. Nasty, right?! Thankfully some new aerobar pads and some anti-fungal ointment cleared things up.

So here is the thing: how come nobody told me that you have to clean your aerobar pads too?! Okay, maybe looking back it makes complete sense that you’d have to clean/replace the thing that your arms are sweating all over for hours and hours week after week. I clean my bike shorts, shoes, socks, chain, frame and wheels, but somehow never thought to clean or disinfect my aerobar pads. Way to go, Jamie.
