Just before the swim start at Kona last weekend, Wheaties made a big announcement that for the first time ever the “Ford Ironman World Championship will be featured on the famous orange box in the coming months.”
Now this isn’t the first time that triathlon has been featured on Wheaties boxes. Hunter Kemper (more than once) and Jarrod Shoemaker have gotten their place there before.
While I think that the strange but cool accolade of being on a Wheaties box is well deserved, there is still a bad taste in my mouth after the whole announcement. It was confirmed after Wheaties’ PR rep let me know that when they said they would be featuring the Hawaiian Ironman, they only meant the men’s winner, not the women’s.
There are two races that went on Saturday. A men’s and a women’s race. Saying you are going to feature the Ironman World Championship but only slap one guy on your cereal box is almost like only broadcasting the first week of the Tour de France or the first 13.1 miles of the Boston Marathon.
Maybe I was a crazy feminist in a past life, but where is the love for the women’s champ, Mirinda Carfrae?
Sure, she is bringing home the same sized prize purse as Macca, but Rinny is undoubtedly going to get way less attention when the race airs on NBC (as the women’s race does every year) and she gets completely passed over by Wheaties as well. What gives?
Her whole race, especially the marathon, was freaking amazing.
Even from a marketing standpoint, the ladies out there will agree that Rinny is a lot easier on the eyes than Macca.
Thoughts? Discuss.
