Cedar Point FullRev: Pre-Race

Rev3 Cedar Point

10 years of dreaming, four years of racing, nine months of training and 12 hours of driving later, I arrived at Cedar Point amusement park, the site of my first iron distance triathlon.

HELLO SANDUSKY, OHIO!

I rolled in to town on Friday afternoon so that I’d have plenty of time to get all my gear set up and organized so I’d have as little as possible to do the day before the race. As I checked into my hotel room, a nice big FedEx was waiting for me, a brand new set of Zipp 606′s for race day thanks to Race Day Wheels. Doesn’t Victoria look pretty with her new hoops?   I love how they look and love how they ride even more. Now if they weren’t so damn expensive and I could afford to own them instead of just rent them…

Next up on the schedule was some last minute nutrition advice from the man behind the kick-ass nutrition that I’ve been fueling up with all year, Robert Kunz. It is great having him sponsor the team and being able to pick his brain with last minute race advice. He is a wicked smaht dude. It was a big confidence boost getting a little bit of extra validation that my nutrition plan for race day was solid.

And of course, a road trip to the roller coaster capital of the world just wouldn’t be right without some good ‘ol fashioned adrenaline pumping speed. I figured it wasn’t a good idea to attempt riding any coasters on the day before the race, so I got in as many as I could back-to-back on Friday night.

This one was by far my favorite. Simple, but awesome.

Sunday morning brought some more team duties volunteering at the practice swim and handing out SBR Sports products. The ladies were armed with Tri-Slide and offering to lube up anyone who would take ‘em. Seriously, who would turn down this classy bunch of athletes?

The swim itself was pretty insane. It was really windy and the chop on the water was some of the worst I’d every swam in. It felt like I was back on the roller coasters. Dolphin diving through the surf was fun, but once you got out into the water, it was a big challenge just to time my breathing at the top of each wave and sight the next buoy let alone keep any sort of reasonable pace.

The weather report said that the wind was going to shift and calm down, but nothing is guaranteed. Thankfully the Rev3 folks had a backup swim plan so it wouldn’t turn into a duathlon, because if race day conditions were like Saturday, there would be a lot of DNFs before people even made it to T1.

The thing is that I was pretty excited for the possibilities of a really rough swim. Instead of scary, I figured that it would be epic. Actually nothing at all that day got my nerves giong. I was pretty cool, calm and collected the whole time. For less than 24 hours away from the biggest race I had ever attempted, I was pretty surprised .

That was at least until I started organizing my special needs bags. I don’t know if it was that it was a big enough signal to make it all feel real or that I’d never done a race long enough to need special needs bags, but I was freaking out BIG TIME. Pacing around the room, moving stuff aimlessly from one pile to another, talking out loud to myself, the whole 9. Thankfully Sam was there to help calm me down and that was my first and only pre-race freak out.

After kicking my feet up, a chicken dinner and plenty of hydration with EFS, it was bed time.

Up next, the full race report.

Trakk Me At Rev3 Cedar Point

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

If any of you are interested in tracking me during my first iron distance race tomorrow,  here is the info.

I’ll be wearing at Trakkers GPS device. It will broadcast my location and pace along the course to a blinking dot on a google map. You can access it here.

http://live.trakkersgps.com/events.aspx

Click on Cedar Point – find my name and hit go.

I won’t be wearing it on the swim. I’ll pick it up once I head out on the bike around 8:30. I’m expecting to cross the finish line between 7 and 8pm tomorrow night if all goes well, but a lot of things can happen in a 140.6 mile race.

Also, if for some reason the GPS device isn’t working, you can track my splits that are picked up at a few points along the course at www.rev3tri.com. There should be a link there for timing. It isn’t there tonight, so if you don’t see it, don’t worry.

See you on the other side of the finish line! Thanks everyone for all your support. I haven’t been able to respond to everyone’s messages, but I’ve read all of them and could not be more grateful.

Countdown to FullRev

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

I just crossed off the last workout of the last training block of the last peak phase before the FullRev at Cedar Point.

This weekend was another long lonely set or workouts. Saturday was a solid 110 mile bike and 2 mile BRick run. Today was a hilly 4.5 hour hilly hike.

I’m feeling strong and ready for race day. Actually, I’m feeling sorta invincible. It has become a common occurance for me to come home from a workout and start flexing and grunting for Sam in the middle of the living room. She just rolls her eyes, but I think it is hilarious. I think I’m looking all fit and glistening in sweat, but in reality I’m just stinking up the whole living room.

But now all the major workouts are in the books. There is nothing left to do but slowly taper for race day. No cramming, just slowly dialing back the length and bumping up the intensity of my workouts, but keeping the frequency. I even got some sweet new race day kicks from Saucony. Check ‘em out. Super comfortable and they are going to keep my feet nice and comfortable to rock the marathon.

Here are the 5 things that I’m going to focus on over the next month:

  1. Sleep – I’ve been doing a lot of early morning workouts so that I can actually see Sam between when work gets out and when I go to sleep. I can’t remember the last time that I didn’t have the alarm set to 5:xx am.
  2. Eat Right – I’ve been pretty good about keeping my diet in check, but that is going to be extra important over the next month. I’ve gotten pretty lean over the last month or two. I’m hoping to keep that going so that I don’t have any muffin top peeking out under my tri shorts in my race pictures.
  3. Race Visualization – This will be a biggie. I have to hone my top secret attack plan for race day and go over it until I can recite it forwards and backwards at 145 bpm.
  4. Get my man cave in order – I’m the most organized when all my gear is in order. Plus, it will help me make sure everything is right where it needs to be come race day. Not to mention that the downtube on my bike apparently has dried worms or some crap stuck to it. That needs to get taken care of ASAP. Plus, a good chain degresing and lubing wouldn’t hurt either.
  5. Stretch, Yoga and Massage – I’ve beaten up my body lately, especially over the last three weeks. With that comes a lot of knots, kinks and tweaks. Especially in my left hamstring, so you better believe that sucker is going to get some extra TLC. My new favorite massage therapist, Sam Peck, should be expecting a call. Any Boston friends in need of some poking and prodding, definitely hit up www.soarbody.com, but not until I make my appointment!

Anything I’m missing here?

Feeling of The Finish Line

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

You know that feeling when you running along and you can hear the buzz of the finish line in the distance? You know that it just out of sight and you can feel the anticipation building in your body.

I imagine that the feeling is a little different for everyone, but for me the pain in my legs goes away, I get a huge smile, a burst of adrenaline and my entire body gets that “pins and needles” tingling. It doesn’t happen at every race, but when it does, I know it has been a great day.

Rev3 Triathlon Tennessee

At Timberman last year, the run course was a two loop out and back. At the half way point as I passed by the buzz of the finishing chute, I started to get “that feeling” and had to mentally calm myself down because I still had 6.6 miles to go and didn’t want to drain my adrenaline reserves with so much left in the race.

Yesterday, I did my longest training run so far for my first Ironman. 19 miles of running with only stops/walk breaks at “aid stations” that I set up to top off my fuel belt water reserves. At about mile 13, I started to get that “finish line feeling.”

It was the realization that all the pieces were coming in to place. My training is going smoothly. I am able to run farther than I ever have before with less effort. It was the ultimate “holy crap, I’m actually doing it! I’m going to be an Ironman!”-type of moment. But then I had to swallow it, calm down and knock out another 6 miles on my feet. There is still plenty of work to do between now and September before I can get that feeling again for real.

I’ve been dreaming of this day for at least 10 years and it is finally becoming reality.

I’ll be living the dream on September 12, 2010. Meet me in Sandusky, Ohio.
