The Illusion of Talent

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

With a healthy diet of Olympics coverage this week, I’ve been having some deep conversations withmyself on talent vs training. It always gets under my skin when people make comments about an athlete’s “natural born talent” with their training as a mere side note.

Sure, it may be genetics and specific body proportions that turn Phelps from what would otherwise simply be a world class swimmer into the freak of nature (in a good way) that he is today, but it is very dangerous to overemphasize the impact of genetics in his success.

If Phelps had picked up football in High School, he may still have the same general body proportions, short legs and huge wingspan, but his flexibility and strength would be like from an entirely different animal.

My point is that personal physiology is not a static element in someone’s life. The human body is insanely adept at reacting to the environment that you put it in.

Personal physiology is not a static factor. The human body reacts to the environment that you put it in.

Train, live and eat like a marathoner. You will have a marathoner’s body.

Train, live and eat like a weightlifter. You will have a weightlifter’s body.

That is not to say that if you train like an Olympic runner, that you will necessarily be taking home gold, or even making it to the games, but you will certainly take on some of their physical characteristics.

For example: In High School I was a running machine. Cross Country was my thing. That is all I did. I was 6 feet tall, 140 pounds, ate like a bird and you could see my ribs when I ran shirtless. I ran 5-6 days a week almost year-round and could pull off 17 minute 5ks. I was never fast enough to break any records, but did pretty well for myself.

Flash forward to today. After realizing the whole skin and bones look wasn’t exactly what the ladies were looking for and taking a few years off in college from running to become a gym rat and drink Keystone Light on a regular basis I completely changed my body. I balooned up to about 195 pounds, actually got chest and arm muscles and I barely looked like the same person. Since college I’ve slimmed down to about 175 now that I’ve gotten in to triathlon training, but you get the point.

There is no way that, with the body I have now, I can pull off runs like I did in High school, but also I probably couldn’t climb hills on a bike or zip across lakes as smoothly with the body that I had then.

My point is that natural born talent is an illusion. Most of us may never break the tape at Kona, it is key to remember that our bodies are products of the environments that we choose to put them in.

And now for the movie that is reponsible for helping to form most of my views on “talent.” If you havent’ ever seen Without Limits, go rent it now.

Half Ironman Training with Joanna Zeiger

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

I sat in on a seminar about Half Ironman Training with pro triathlete Joanna Zeiger at the Multisport World Expo last weekend. It was SO helpful. Joanna even has a Ph.d. and is Wicked Smaht! Who knew?! I caught a few minutes of it on video. There was a lot more that she talked about, including sample workouts, training time goals, but my video camera couldn’t hold all the triathlon goodness and shut off half way. :-)

Hopefully this helps a few of you out there who are looking to get the confidence to start training for your first half ironman! It SO pumped me up for Rhode Island 70.3!

Update:

I guess I ruffled some feathers when publishing video of a paid seminar. Sorry kids, I had to take the video down.

The Hunger

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Now that I have actually started to take my training seriously and am more than a month into my official training plan, I’ve noticed a lot of changes.First, I’m probably at least a month or two ahead of where I was last year in fitness. (Hoping for some good PRs this year!) Lately I’ve noticed that I’m hungry ALL THE TIME. Before workouts, after workouts, during workouts, before bed, in the shower… All the time.

I did a BRick workout yesterday on the trainer and burped up a mozzarella chicken sandwich that I had for dinner (which tasted just as good the second time around BTW) and REALLY wished that I had saved that second half to much on during the bike.

Hey, it is called race day nutrition practice people. Don’t judge.

Now I’m at work, it is 10:00 a.m. and my BP&J and stack of chocolate chip cookies are calling my name. I couldn’t resist. That samich disappeared in 2 seconds flat.

So now I’m lunch-less and starting to eye that banana I’ve got hanging out on top of my computer. Mmmmmmm. My prediction is that I’m going to have to dive into my stash of Clif bars in my drawer by 2:30. Bets anyone?

Today’s main motivation to keep training:

Because if I don’t, I’m going to become a FAT ASS!

Saturday Night Party Patrol

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

Triathlon training definitely makes my weekend mornings more interesting: early morning open water swims, road trips to races, running through the woods watching the sun come up, being the first to lay foot prints in fresh snow along the Charles river.
Clearly it is damaging my weekend nights. I have trouble staying up past 11pm and can’t stay in bed past 9 in the morning, and tonight is no different.

An hour and a half brick workout put me out of commission tonight and its pretty quiet here in the Bull household. The GF is out at the bar down the street for “girl’s night” and I’m more than happy to hold up the fort on my own. I’ve got 3:10 to Yuma in the DVD player a cool tall glass of Gatorade by my side, and my favorite obnoxiously bright orange Syracuse University sweatshirt on while I try to stretch and work out some of the soreness in my calves. Very comfortable, but not exactly how I expected to be living out my 20′s in Boston. Haha.

Oh well. Tomorrow is a new day, but I’ve still got my money on me being up before 9 and putting in some quality miles on the trail before most people even start thinking about what they’ll have for lunch.

Not your typical 20-something lifestyle, but it’ll do I guess.
